They laid a true hero to rest yesterday.

Just down the street from my studio in Woodbury, Connecticut, not much more than a 100 yards was the service for Dawn Lafferty Hochsprung, the principal of Sandy Hook Elementary school. She was the first person the gunmen saw upon entering the school. No one ever expects that you'd have to put your life on the the line doing your job as a teacher or administrator but that's just what she did. She along with the school psychologist lunged at the deranged individual that forced his way into the school. They were both shot dead.

The line of cars stretches for miles and miles. Woodbury was where Dawn was principal before she moved to Bethlehem Elementary and then Newtown where she had been principal for two years.

Woodbury is a town about half the size of Newtown but very similar in New England spirit as all these small towns are around here. Every year luminaries are placed around town, as seen in my painting on Christmas eve. Yesterday, in front of the funeral home of Dawn's service, those lumanaries spelled out the word "HOPE".

Let's all HOPE and pray this is the last time we have to do this . Let's HOPE for tougher gun control and let's HOPE for better treatment of people with mental illness.

I dedicate these hopefull paintings to the wonderful people of all these towns.

An unbelievable sidenote to this unspeakable tragedy is this:

Members of the quasi-religious group, Westboro Baptist Church, planned to gather in Connecticut to protest the funeral of Newtown, Conn., shooting victim Principal Dawn Hochsprung. However, Good Samaritans were already there to thwart any possible protest with a human wall. The Westboro Baptist Church announced plans to picket Hochsprung's funeral on Wednesday in Woodbury, Conn., and "sing praise to God for the glory of his work in executing his judgment." The group has blamed the mass shooting on Connecticut's same-sex marriage legislation. On Dec. 14, 26 people were shot at Sandy Hook Elementary School, 20 of those victims included children ages 6 and 7.

I received a town wide email stating that there could be protests. Disgusting!

	Here's the hope image

	and the article re Westboro

Thanks to Victor Juhasz for posting about Amid. I did a monthly column for him at Esquire. I remember him as a wonderful art director and just all around nice guy. Here's a couple of my pieces I had done for him over the years. Thanks Amid.

These were for a monthly piece called the House Hunter where Esquire scouted out great housing buys. They are Hawaii and Lousiana.

New beginnings

Hello everyone and thanks for inviting me to join Drawger. I've been a big fan and have enjoyed reading this blog for years. I want to especially thank Alan Witschonke, my friend and classmate from RISD. The bar has been set quite high here and I'm going to try and live up to it.

I'm calling this first post "New Beginnings" because for me I feel like this is a new begining. Recently, I've gone through some life changing experiences. a divorce after 30 years of marriage and losing both my parents all in the span of about 5 years. Through it all I've felt lucky there was a constant in my life. Art. It got my through some rough times. Now it seems things are on a roll. Gallery sales are good illustration has been nice and steady and I'm now working as an adjunct professor at Western Connecticut State University.

Like many people on this site I wanted to be an illustrator almost as far back as I can remember. My first job was working for a medical illustrator at Columbia-Presbytian hospital in NYC then later working for an illustration studio. (The same one as the Bill Mayer) I also worked as an art director for two years before going freelance at the ripe old age of 27. It's been a great ride with the usual ups and downs.

I love having a finished painting I can hang on the wall. Book cover art and advertising appeals to me the most as does a plum editorial assignment. I favor conceptual work but lately I've just been doing a lot of book jackets. I'm lucky to have some wonderful agents in Lindgren and Smith. Two real pros.

Several years ago I found myself slow later in the year. Almost always around December . So I thought I'd try and remedy that by starting a business that would produce prints I could sell at Christmas time. I did several paintings close by, all beautiful Connecticut towns. They sold well so I was off and running. They got into galleries and to my surprise, got me assignments. the Housatonic Museum of art even acquired my painting of Bethlehem Ct.

One of my favorite clients has been LL Bean. Not only do they give me great subjects to work with but my paintings land on millions of coffee tables all across the country. That's better reach than most magazines. Once again, this client came from my self generated project. LL Bean also buys the original art another plus for us painters.

I'm looking forward to being here and updating my progress. Here's to new beginings!
