Yet another book find!
posted:
One of my favorite etchings in this book. Rembrandt's "Mother".
I dropped by a favorite small bookstore of mine here in sleepy Concord California, and found this beauty of a book! It is a book by Joseph Pennell, a well known illustrator that was in his prime on the turn of the 19th to 20th century. Pennell wrote a series of books on the different disciplines realted to the "graphic arts", and this is one in the series of four books. He uses examples of what makes a great etching, by referring to the masters. He also lays out the process of creating etchings, and other printing methods. The great thing about this book is that the reproductions in it are real etchings! A book like this would bankrupt a small publisher these days for this production aspect alone. If I were to purchase this from say, Ursus Books in New York, it would run me at least a hundred clams. I paid only ten dollars for it!! this is the find for the year. I feel just like Harvey Pekar after the purchase of a rare 78!
