Robert Altman

This portrait of Robert Altman should be in The New Yorker magazine this week.  I was asked to do it the day after he passed away recently.
I've realized over time that one of the more important things to have when I'm doing a portrait is a personality with interesting facial structure, lines, character, etc.  I found Altman's face inspiring to draw so I did a lot of sketches, some of which you can see below.
