Dusty & Jason from Heads of State designed ICON6's poster

Back in New York, which means waking up at almost noon- instead of at almost 9 am!- I'm happy to say I'm proud of our job, the board's that is, at ICON6.

We changed the format (mutiple choices Vs. now one-tent), we changed the attitude (nasty chain emails Vs. happy-go-lucky board experience), we changed the speakers (mostly show&tell illustrators Vs. more art directors) and we continued to do our very best to make sure it was worth your time, money and high expectations.

So far so good, even ICON all-timers like Gary Taxali, Kathie Bleck and Ann Field said it was the best ICON ever- I'm afraid to ask Hively, but dying to know what he thinks.

I felt honored, thrilled, and scared (shitless) to be on the stage with all of you in the audience. For real. Thanks for coming, thanks for staying, thanks for your support, and thanks for putting up with me when you're MY speakers. Hopefully I was half as good as you- drawgers- are on the stage.

Hope to see you again sooner than later, in NY, in LA, or wherever the next ICON is.

Here are some more pix of joy, for those of you who are not on Facebook.

Highlights include:
Soccer game | Art Center party | Opening party | Happy hour | Nucleus opening | Closing party ... oh, yeah, and the actual conference

Special thanks to Paul Rogers, Brian Rea, Jason Holley, Heads of State and Tim Biskup for making us sound cool, funny and charming even when we're not.

More great times to come!

ICON6 – The Illustration Conference – LA July 2010
posted: June 29, 2010
So, among many of the hats I wear in the illustration field, I’m the vice president of ICON6, which is- as you ALL know-  the only creative conference in the US that focuses exclusively on ILLUSTRATION.
It’s been 2 years of a lot of work to plan an unforgettable event people leave with A LOT from, making it worth their money, energy and time.
Now, we’re almost there, merely 2 weeks away, and I can say with certainty that we, the board, have proudly achieved our goal: This is the best ICON ever, packed with art directors and art buyers, illustration stars, educators and a couple of networking events (full disclosure: I’m the events chair too) that will make sure you don’t remember what you did last night.
The conference rate is about to go up, so hurry! If you’re wondering if it’s worth it, I can assure you won’t regret it.
Speakers include The New York Times, creatives from the illustrated United ad campaign, Christoph Niemann, DreamWorks, Yuko Shimizu, Random House, Tim Biskup, Wired, Taschen, Peter Askle, Melinda Beck, Rod Hunt and Bil Donovan among many others.

I'm producing one single lecture at the Society of Illustrators of New York, one important one though, especially if you work with any kind of art supplies that release fumes- who doesn't?!
Here is the flyer for it with all the info. Hope you can make it!

Solo Show in Buenos Aires
posted: April 29, 2010
A couple of years ago I worked on a personal series called War of Words, which focused on 10 universal, modern arguments: Love, politics, sports, protests, customer service, friendship, parenthood, childhood, religion, and self. I thought it would be exhibited back then, either in New York or Buenos Aires, where I have most of my connections, but I didn't have time to shop it around the fine arts world, and nothing ever happened beyond getting a few silver medals and some good print exposure- no complaints.

Last year, when I was opening a solo exhibit at the Centro Cultural Borges in Buenos Aires, finally a real gallerist, Fernando Entin from Elsi del Rio, approached me. My dream had come true: I would finally be represented by a reputable gallery back home.
He had been following my career for quite a few years, he said, and he loved my work. He wanted to give me a solo show next year, 2010, while Arte BA was taking place, which is the equivalent to the Armory Show in New York or Art Basel in Miami, and the best time to have work up.
So here I am, exhibiting something I created a few years back- but I still feel proud of- with only 2 additional pieces I did for this show replacing the Love War, which is owned by the Society of Illustrators of New York, and the Self War, which is the punch line of the show and I felt deserved to be in Spanish. Here is that one:
Self War in Spanish with words that reflect the 200th anniversary of the independence of Argentina from Spain back in 1810.
Those of you who're in Buenos AIres, I hope you can make it!
Opening: Monday, May 3rd, 7-10 PM (thru July 3rd, 2010)
Where: Elsi del Rio, Humbolt 1510 (@ Gorriti) - Palermo Hollywood

Show invite. Parenthood War.
Some other pieces:
Customer Service War
Politics War
Sports War
