About six months back or so I got this book jacket assignment for Harper Collins, the cover for Taro Greenfeld's new novel Triburbia. This is the kind of work I love to get, a departure from what I generally do, a chance to break out a little bit, one of those jobs where there's risk and fear involved. Fellow illustrators can relate, there are jobs that you get where you can almost go on auto pilot, like doing the same piece over and over, it's good to be efficient and reliable but you also need challenge. I worked with A.D. Archie Ferguson on this, pro all the way.
The composition is quite different from most of what I do and the approach certainly more narrative. The title was also done by me, based on an existing font then modified. I don't think the job called for me to do all the type treatment but I can't imagine the cover done any other way, at least this cover. My roughs below have the original notes to Archie.

The last part of this assignment was to add a map for the interior. 

Learned a valuable lesson, do your research, never too late to learn something new. For me this is a new direction, not sure where I will apply it-but I will.
