Weather the storm
posted:
It seems that most of my posts feature work for the NY Times or Soojin, so here are a couple more. This first piece was done for this past Sunday's Week in Review. The subject was how the economy follows patterns much like weather. Kelly Doe was the AD on this and gave me the freedom to keep the concept loose and abstract. I wouldn't say this is abstract but I tried to stay away from money imagery, actually my rough of this had no money icons but we added a few subtle references in the final, they kind of get lost in everything else, good.

The second piece, the bather, was done for Soojin. I just love when she calls and gives me one word direction like "reflection" or something like that. When I was working on concepts for this piece I kept going back to M.C Escher but god has that stuff been knocked off so much, and even though it's fantastic work we are all so used to seeing it in the back of Spencer Gifts, so I tried to be inspired a bit and leave it at that, as it should be.

I'm not sure this worked out exactly the way I intended, does anything ever? I wanted to go with just simple black line but sometimes feel like I'm cheating the client if I don't add color. I recall one a.d telling me on another job, "Don't go tarting it up with too much color" I was offended ta the time ,but sage advice I suppose.
I kind of liked this idea like the good times are frozen for now but they'll be back. If a little inflatable pool and a tub of High Life doesn't say GOOD TIMES then what does?
Funny thing. This weather vane idea was originally done for Soojin but I resurrected it for this financial weather story.
I wanted to draw one of those punch clocks, the weather vane was probably a goofy combo.
This was my first idea for Soojin's piece. I got the idea from a book I have called The Playful Idea. I may revisit this and finish it off. I was thinking a very ornate playing card type of finish.
