And if you give me: weed, whites, and wine
And you show me a sign
I'll be willin', to be movin'

These are edited from a 2010 sketchbook called RED -because it’s mostly drawn with red pencil and wash. Naturally, I can never stay the course but nevertheless, I usually grab onto some kind of loosey goosey theme to get me started making pictures whether it’s a color limitation or some other literary or formal device, then I try to let it rip [as much as I am able]. It goes in spurts: long protracted sessions followed up with some finished polishing, then a gap, then another, smaller spurt, etc. It all depends. I always try to review as I proceed, working back and forth gathering and combining, no particular place to go. It’s easy to get lost and as I’ve said before, often I’ll find that I’m amusing myself rather than working on a project! And, although I’m not compulsive at all, there is an element of urgency, like a need similar to hunger and satiation that really does emerge from it all. It’s like a piñata in a lot of ways too; you swing around until you hit something. And although it’s fun, it’s never easy. In this set, I’m looking at everything from early Spanish American art to Napoleon, vintage racecars and Joran van der Sloot. My newest book is in a larger format so we’ll see how that goes next time….
Have a good one and stay tuned to Radio Scaryjoey.com broadcasting out of the rainy/snowy Sierra Nevada.
Oh, yeah, and the coolest thing for me this year was getting placed into all three major, professional competitions!
