PAUL, THE BIRDMAN OF WASHINGTON SQUARE PARK.

Paul sits in the same spot on the same bench in Washington Square Park every day, weather permitting, feeding the pigeons. In sketching him over a period of months I learned that's he's named many of them. He's constantly being photographed with some people fascinated and others disgusted. It greets them all with the same same sense of humor. This is what he does.

A few of the many sketches.

He consented to my snapping these iPhone grabs.

After a long search through magazines and files I couldn't find enough wood texture or brown to make the bench. I decided to go with black. It's a collage, a work of imagination, and not a photograph. The wood grain was created by simply sand-papering over some magazine pages on the old wooden drafting table I've been working on since my dad brought it hom from his garbage route when I was in the fifth grade.
