Another Voice: Political Art of the Late Twentieth Century
posted:
My deal with illustrators was that I couldn't pay them much, but I could give them freedom to function.”
--Patrick JB Flynn. Speaking of great art directors, here's a link to Another Voice a traveling exhibit curated by Patrick Flynn. The show is a collection of work from The Progressive magazine 1981-99. Above is one of my favorite Philip Burke's. I wish some savvy AD would get that man to pick up the pen and ink again. Contemporary political graphics just haven't been the same since Pat Flynn left The Progressive. What were they thinking? You'll learn all about that at the site. Anyway the exhibit includes a lot of big names---Julian Allen, Marshall Arisman, Melinda Beck, Steve Brodner, Sue Coe, Henrik Drescher, Randall Enos, Mark Fisher, Stuart Goldenberg, Brad Holland, Jordan Isip, J D King, David Klein, Anita Kunz, Gary Panter, Jonathan Rosen, Arnold Roth, Lane Smith, Ralph Steadman and Mark Ulriksen among many others. At the site, click on the names to see artwork.
By the way, Patrick wasn't kidding when he said they couldn't pay much. It never mattered. It was always a great privilege to work with him and have my collages appear in The Progressive.
This is one of Patrick's own works.
