R. O. Blechman illustrated forty covers for STORY. These are what I have in my collection. I wish I had them all. I've been a great fan of Blechman's work for a long, long time. His art has always given me a place to breathe.
And a bonus cover since 'tis the season. This one features a photo of comedian Bobby Clark dressed up as Santa Claus. For those not in the know, one of his trademarks was a pair of eyeglasses which he drew directly on his face with grease paint. Hirschfeld wrote of him, "...(he) had a tremendous influence on comic performers after him, everyone copied that walk, including Groucho Marx...Bobby Clark invented it, sort of hugging the ground with his knees. It was a very strange anatomical disfiguration that captures his, and his character's personality. And of course it's the kind of vibrant motion that always captures my eye and imagination." Although he did a few short films with his partner Paul McCullough back in the thirties, his career took place mostly on the Vaudeville, Burlesque and Broadway stage. Consequently, he is largely forgotten today. Where are Drew Friedman and Lou Brooks when you need them?

from The Push Pin Graphic: A Quarter Century of Innovative Design and Illustration "Elegant hardcover magazines free of advertisements, including such titles as Panorama, Eros, American Heritage and Art in America, sold exclusively through subscription, had a respectable following during the sixties and early seventies. A devoted targeted audience was willing to pay higher annual rates to receive smartly produced periodicals---they were hybrids that fell somewhere between a book and a magazine. For two years, in 1970 and 1971, Chwast and Glaser were design directors of one of the last of this unique breed: Audience, a hardcover bimonthly published by Tim Hall, who was financially backed by an Avon cosmetics heir to create a literary and cultural magazine, something like The New Yorker..."
Thanks to Lou Brooks for providing the scan for Vol. 1 No. 2 '71.
This is my all-time favorite Beatles cover. I wasn't part of the peace and love generation so I didn't know you were supposed to hate Yoko. I was in the sixth grade when this cover came out. I thought she was great. Still do.

Once again, I've been scanning some magazine covers for Robert Newman Design. These are a few. Mine are just thrown here somewhat randomly. When they appear in Robert's blog they're all neat and orderly by topic or title. That may be a reflection on how our minds work. Something to mull over while planning your summer vacation.

This issue of LIFE, published in 1968, had a huge impact on me as a kid.

From time to time over the past few months I've been scanning in some magazine covers for Robert Newman Design. Some he posts, some he doesn't. Robert generally organizes them by topic or title. He's built an impressive archive of design and illustration. The link is below.
