Readers, Writers and Artists, Oh My!
posted: August 26, 2010

I've been having a great time creating book-related illustrations for the SCBWI Members Bulletin (Society of Children's Book Writers & Illustrators).  The art must feature reading, writing, or arting around, all three of which I love.
Of course, my first spread isn't about any of the above (sigh)- every issue the Bulletin lists out awards that have been won in the field, so I created these lovely winning girls to inspire artists to start entering contests- myself included!
(Apologies for blurring out the text- it's an industry pub and I can't imagine they'd be pleased with me plastering it all  over the internet.  You can subscribe to read the whole thing though at scbwi.org, well worth the membership fee!).
I used to love reading under the covers- who didn't?  It's supposed to be a scary story book, not a packet outlining the changes to the Tribute Fund, but you take what you can get.
close-up! zomgz!

And my favorite, the two intrepid authors.  This one is from real life- when I was a tweenager back in the day, my BFF and I collaborated on an epic novel, which we also set up to be optioned for film.  The funding never quite came though, but I still think it would have been a success.  Here we are in her grandparent's basement, transcribing our latest inspirations on their old typewriter.
This adorable little pup and his artist master didn't make the cut this issue.  They will, however, be up in a charity art auction next month for the Brooklyn-based BARC animal shelter!  The show is Sept. 13th, stay tuned for a proper post with more info and art and whatnot.  Just a teaser :)

For a fun change of pace, I got to work on some period biblical illustrations earlier this year - no tweens or hot pink to be had here, kids!

Well, there are some tweens.

All of the art was game-based, so there was a fun little twist to each picture.  Above is a blank inn room to be drawn on, opposite Jesus, Mary & Martha (how many other things beginning with "M" can you spot?? Moustaches, mugs, mice, mats, this mag's got it all.

Some fun matching games, a word find, and a follow-the-lines puzzle.  Below is my original sketch for the lines puzzle, but I interpreted the art description incorrectly and had to re-work it (puzzles are tricky!).  I still think it's a neat sketch, so here you go.
Left page by Lohman Hills, right page by myself.

On a side note, the original art for this illustration went to none other than the superbly talented Victor Juhasz!  He recently welcomed a new addition to his family, and decided to start the baby's art collection early.
Last but not least, some tweens <3.

Thanks again to Ivy at Augsburg Fortress, both for the rad assignment and for the beautiful layouts!  I always love showing off final products, they're so much more impressive than my plain little jpgs.  Teamwork!! :D

Good morning Drawgerites- hope you all had a lovely and pleasant Memorial Day weekend!
While everyone was off having a great time and frolicking in the sunshine and eating BBQ, I decided to stay in and update my website.  Click here to see the awesomeness!!
(why yes, I AM a hit at parties, why do you ask??)
I added all kinds of work, new & old favorites up on the front page.  More color favorites get filed in the "More illustrations" gallery, which you can find here.
Not only is there a increase in demand for B&W work for YA books, I have a sudden collection of it (I love it when that happens!).  The Sophie Series I've been working on all year is 99% B&W, and I've been doing lots of promo images sans color as well.
Click over here to see my brand new Black & White gallery!
That's all for now kids! Thanks for reading and have a super week :)
