It was unusual (for me anyway) in that rather than beginning with an idea and developing into an image, I had part of an image and worked an idea into it. This may be the only time I've worked this way. For the benefit of students here's a breakdown. I'd be curious if others have has similar experiences working this way.

The article looked at Vancouver's push toward being a more tech-friendly city. I presented a few ideas, but this idea, a building as mobile device is what they liked most. Although the final result bears very little resemblance, thoughts of Led Zeppelin's Physical Grafitti cover art, as well as scenes from Hitchcock's Rear Window came to mind as I worked on it.

I was commissioned a few months ago to do the cover of a 'schools issue' for a city magazine. Got dropped at sketch stage - in favor of photography. grrrr. I decided to finish it anyway, leaving space for masthead and type. The upside: no editor second-guessing my every move.
