UArts Portfolio Day
posted:
It's just over a week until our Senior Illustration Portfolio Day, and I'd like to encourage you all to come.
The University of the Arts has been holding this event for fourteen years. I started working on it three years ago when I first started teaching the Senior Portfolio Course. I went into the project with a bit of skeptecism. I wasn't sure if this type of event was stillnbsprelevantnbspin the age of the internet. I pushed my hesitations aside, and worked with my colleagues and students to make sure the event went off well. The students all rose to the occasion, and we had a huge bunch of wonderful guests. Relationships were established and foundations for careers were laid down. I left the day with a really good sense of the power of face to face communications.nbsp
Before I came on, this event was always held at Society. Our department is growing and growing, so for the last two years we held the event in the larger space of The Salmagundi Club. This year we've grown to a whopping fifty Seniors, and have moved on to yet even bigger digs. I'm really excited about our new location at Open House Gallery.
One of the things I love about the students I teach at UArts is the diverse variety of visual marks they represent. When I look around at their portfolios, I get the sense they've each dug deep inside to come up with a personal way of creating images. I would like to think they present a wide array of visual options for prospective designers to tap into.
My fellow Portfolio instructors, Megan Berkheiser, Jon Twingley, Earl Lewis and I would love to see you there. Please say hello if you are able to stop in. Until then, please take a look at the blog the students have set up. It has interviews, art and links to all of their websites.
