As he prepares to leave his beloved Upper West Side apartment, the author of this article reflects on the parade of characters that have passed through his home over the years. RIchard Weigand, art director at the New York Times / City section, was looking for an image that combined humor and melancholy. I instantly connected with the bittersweet mood of this article since I had similar feelings when I left my old apartment in Park Slope, Brooklyn. I especially like this image because for the first time I've succesfully combined three ways that I like to work: black and white, watercolor/gouache, and my "Ewan MacLeish
" style in the view out the window.
