This is a series of spots in B/W that I've done for the book "Meio Circulante".  
A very nice text about the track of a paper money from hand to hand. There is everything in the book, blackmail, drama, corruption, political, gambling, death... until the money become just an item of a collector. It was a job I enjoyed doing.

For some weeks the AD Teofila Gomes and I discussed by e-mail ( I in Rio de Janeiro, she in Chicago ) the concept for the drawings and its application in the magazine's graphic project.

Here is a piece just finished for The Pennsylvania Gazette magazine, AD:Catherine Gontarek. 
The text: The e-mail arrived just before Christmas.  It was from an Italian ophthalmologist.  “We want to share a very great emotion with you,” she wrote.  One of her patients, a child, had gone to the countryside with his parents about ten days before.  The boy had been born with Leber’s congenital amaurosis, an inherited eye disease that had made him blind.  Outside on one clear night, “he looked up at the sky and asked his mother what those little white spots were,” the doctor wrote.  “He saw the stars for the first time in his life!”

Pee-n-grow : Manufacturing artificial fertiliser is a highly energy intensive process that consumes roughly 1 per cent of the world's energy supply. As odd as it sounds, using sterile, nitrogen-rich human urine instead could prevent the emission of more than 180 million tonnes of C02 each year. Urine collection systems with basement storage tanks have been built by the Stockholm Environmental Institute in more than 800 apartments in rural China, saving an estimated 20 tonnes of C02 emissions annually. Make sense?

DPI Magazine / Taiwan

Awhile ago I was contacted by Sasha Weng from DPI magazine, asking me to feature some of my illustrations and an interview in their design magazine. I got a big surprise on Sunday when I found a parcel from Taiwan waiting for me. It was a couple of copies of DPI magazine. Although I know NO chinese or taiwanese language, I can tell from the content and quality of people working there, it's an amazing magazine.

Could you share your background with us?
My father always worked with illustration. I grew up surrounded by drawings, comic books, graphical art pieces. My father used to work for publicity agencies, and I loved to see those international annual catalogues full of images and letter fonts. I started working as a commercial illustrator very early, which gave me a lot of experience and also a lot of "un-pleasance". My drawings always had good quality and good acceptance, but I felt it very "commercial" and "standardized", very much similar to many other artists'. I took the risk for the change, a quest for my own style, not only for the traces, but also for the concepts. I moved forward in this process for the last 15 years, and have learned that ability is one thing, but creativity is by far much harder to master. I think I could achieve an interesting mix, my work always dialogues with illustration, graphical design, plastic arts. It is becoming more "abstract" and free. As a matter of fact, the important thing is to open new paths and always keep an open mind.
What are the messages which you trying to say from your art work?
I must be sincere. When I start drawing I try not to think of "messages" or "concepts". I make some small sketches by hand, go to the computer and start the composition of my illustration work. From my point of view, there is always the aim for authorial work. When I receive a text for a magazine or newspaper, I try to adapt it to my graphical universe. Sometimes, on the dependence of the editor of art, or the author of the text, the illo is approved in the first version. But many times it is necessary to go a cycle of changes and adaptations - which is consistent with editorial business. I would like to draw always in a more light and ludic way, but it not always possible when working in a commercial basis. I think it is important to participate on exhibits and independent publications; it is a way of give live and visibility to my drawings with no kind of pressures.
What was the first art work you draw? How did you get start with it?
I started by producing silk-screen drawings for t-shirts; after that, I published my drawings in independent magazines, and gathered a small portfolio. Then I looked for work in commercial magazines, and had my first published drawing in a feminine magazine. It was just an spot, but it made me so happy. Since this first one, I didn't stop drawing.
Where do you usually get the inspirations?
I have a passion for images - any kind of images… Old documents, stationary, market bags, photographs, magazines, newspapers, etc. These materials have always been a source of inspiration to me. I have recently bought a book with ancient maps. I look to the maps and "abstract" the cartographical information, and focus the forms, colors and graphic components. This kind of inspiration often occurs to me, to look at an image and see it out of the accepted or conventional meaning of its contents.
What kind of books do you love to read?
I always read anything that came into my hands. Newspapers, comic books, history books, poetry. Presently, I'm reading "Matisse by Matisse", a great book with the artist's thoughts about his work. It's a testimony on the History of Modern Art in the very moment it was being built.
Which illustrator do you admire the most?
That question is hard to answer. There are so many fantastic illustrators that it would be unfair to mention only one. To get a focus on the History of Art, I'd mention Picasso, Miró, Matisse, Saul Stainberg, George Herriman, Basquiat and the amazing Bill Traylor.
If there is going to be the ends of world soon, what will you want to do for your life?
That would be terrible, I imagine all the TV channels with journalists, politicians, priests and prophets talking and screaming all the time... I'd like to be with my wife and my daughter, watching some old "Bugs Bunny" cartoons and tasting my last cappuccino cup.

Eyes on China

Some months ago I have been invited to participate on an exhibition and also on a special issue of Newgraphic magazine, in China.  
The goal was to raise funds for the victims of the earthquake in the Province of Sichuan. 
Recently they have published a website with all the works for this project,  about 200 artists all around the world. Among them we also find our "Drawger" Randall Enos.

We that work with commercial illustration know it is a kind of art that has well-defined rules: text, a defined lay-out, conversation with the AD and a final-art that pleases everybody, being as understandable as possible. 
But besides the every day work, I like drawing to myself and I think that I came to create a "private universe", where there are no rules.  
I always liked Donald Duck and his city full of dogs, ducks, mice that live "in harmony".  I thought: I can do the same! To mix characters, fragmented images, add some phrases, different languages, and make all sort of associations.  Kind of a "crazy-bossa-samba-pop". 
With no "great concept" at all, just the pleasure of drawing and having a good time. As time went by, these "qualities" have been interacting with my commercial work. As a matter of fact,  these drawings make me very happy, and are part of a small book I am preparing to be published in June, with new and old drawings. 
Thank you for your comments about this series Black/ White, you make feel that I am in the right way.

This photo was sent by Bruno Porto, a Brazilian friend who teaches Graphic Design at the Raffles Design Institute in Shangai. The girl is one of his students.

I'm very happy because, after waiting for months, I finally received  the issues of the Chinese magazine NewGraphic.  It's really a cool edition, well printed, big format.  I'm in the company of great designers, I like Reza Abedini.  He's from Iran and does a wonderful artwork, you really should see his website:   www.rezaabedini.com/

I contacted by editor Ge Hong last year, they wanted to publish  something about my work. They asked for a presentation text,  so I didn't think twice: I wrote for our great  Randall Enos  and sent my works for his appreciation. He quickly wrote a very intelligent and generous text.

Here's a summary of the whole story.... 
 
"Imagine you’ve just earned $5 for filling out a brief a questionnaire, and someone gives you the chance to donate some or all of that money to alleviate poverty in Africa.  How much of your unexpected windfall would you be willing to part with?  As anyone in the business of charity could  tell you, that depends on the sales pitch.   
If you’re given information about the plight of 3 million children going  hungry on account of regional food shortages, you might decide to reopen  your wallet.  Or you might not — perhaps reasoning that the problem is too vast for your donation to make an impact.  But if instead you’re  confronted with a picture of a seven-year-old girl named Rokia who lives in poverty in Mali, chances are that you’ll have a much harder time resisting the urge to give."

Brazilian children's book

I've made this illustrations 3 years ago (how time flies!) for a Brazilian children's book called  " É isso ali ". It was a collection of little, beautiful and sophisticated poems. 
I really felt free to work as I pleased. Sometimes I think I'm very lucky, since I can do things my way and suffer no objections. I consider it a prize. It's not always like this, but that's the way things are. :-)

Two illustrations for New Scientist magazine / UK. 
The Text: "Is it really possible to multi-task ? On her morning drive to work, Debbie drinks her coffee, eats her breakfast, checks her email and chats with her mum, often all at once. She hates wasting time. This isn't just a female talent: Alun can conduct a job interview on top of answering emails and surfing the web. These people are examples of an elite species of human: multitaskers. They can juggle more activities in 5 minutes than our ancestors did in a day. Or so they like to think."   
     
PS: I had a beginning of terrible week... My hard disk burned! Really a true hell! I called a firm of data and I got to recover almost everything!  Fly money... but I am in the sky! :-)

At the risk of sounding obvious, the theme was birds and I made my birds. 
The art director spoke to me that the author of the text didn't like  a lot of the drawing, he wanted something more "real "...

Recently I made this illustration for Bizz, Brazilian magazine   
of music and pop culture.   
I didn't receive the text to read, they sent me the format  
of the drawing and just a sentence:   
" the text will be about the author's memories on the   
year of 1990 ". I believe that was I called because my drawing has   
a very abstract side. I liked to do and they also liked  the final result.  
I would like always to draw like this...

Hello folks, I finished this illustration today for Suenos Ilustrados, a book of children's dreams edited by Roger Omar and illustrated by artists from several countries.  
This is a selection made from thousands of dreams of boys and girls, gathered each winter since 2002 in México, Spain, and Brasil. 
 
My text: THE DOGS / Dreamed by a girl in Mexico       
" Today I dreamed that I was a puppy and I could speak. My owners didn't love me because I was short, so they threw me away. Later, some sirs picked me up and took good care of me. My first owners got mad. Then I escaped and went to play with my friends the dogs. "
