The Illustration Conference - ICON5
Posted by Von Glitschka at 3:38 am on February 11th |
It's been many months in development (Herding cats if you will) but I finally put the finishing touches on the ICON5 web site and it is now live.
Drawgers own "Edel Rodriguez" did the event poster and you'll see his ICON5 art within the site, very cool work! All the header art and interior header art on the site comes from a diverse range of NYC illustrators.
As most of you probably know "The Illustration Conference" will be in NYC this time at the Roosevelt Hotel.
Get the complete skinny here.
Look forward to seeing you all there!

Doodle Movies
Posted by Von Glitschka at 6:44 pm on November 24th |
'Doodle Movie - Trashing Abe' |
A recent drawing of Abraham Lincoln, some found textures from a parking garage in Nashville, a church door in NYC and a local parking lot. Also included is several historical diagrams I found in a vintage high school science book which I've made into Photoshop brushes.
Mix them all together and you get this essential nonsense.

 'Doodle Movie - htmhell' |
In an age of flash animation and online video the venerable animated gif keeps marching along and that is why I enjoy creating these 'Doodle Movies'.
I came across a web site that was so poorly designed the content was all scrambled and it looked so ugly it was kind of cool so I took a screen capture to use it for the above animation.

Embracing my inner geek.

Ferengi character from Star Trek. |
I admit I love watching Star Trek. Over the years I've enjoyed the Ferengi characters the most. Since I just got TIVO I've been watching a lot of Star Trek lately and was reminded again of how much this specific character amused me and I've been meaning to illustrate one based on a sketch I did a few months ago.
Well I had a few extra hours last night so I created the art shown above. I integrated their official logo and an actual rule of acquisition. Of course if you're not familiar with the Star Trek universe then this art will mean very little to you and you'll just think I am a geek and yes you'd be correct in that assessment, and my wife would be of the exact same mindset as you too. :-)
You can see a larger version of this art here.

Texture Test Drive
Posted by Von Glitschka at 10:46 pm on June 27th |
This texture came from the side of Paula Deen's Restaurant. Good food, crappy building. |
I recently got back from the HOW Design Conference where I did a book signing for 'Crumble. Crackle. Burn'. That went well and my wife, two kids and I then got to visit the wonderful city of Savannah Georgia.
While there I couldn't help myself and went texture exploring. I created a '10' image set that you guys can download using the link at the bottom of this post. Keep in mind it's a pretty hefty download but the source files are well worth it I think.
|
This old wall was part of the waterfront where Pirates landed back in the day. Arrrgh! |
All of the texture files are derived from real-world surface textures so the end result when using them gives you a nice authentic flair.
Enjoy!
Download the Texture set here. (Download is 125MB)

Green Poster
Posted by Von Glitschka at 7:06 pm on May 27th |
 'Evergreen Poster Illustration' |
I was asked to design a poster for an art show in Mexico called 'DO2'. I had been thinking a lot about the environment and green related topics the past two days after reading an article titled 'Plastic Ocean'. I was inspired to create art that had a green theme to it. I decided to play off the tribal tattoo look but instead of being hard core I gave it a subtle foliage flair while limiting my color palette to greens.
I'd love to get this printed some day on recycled paper using soy inks to really push the whole green aspect of it. I think that would be really cool.

Nisqually - NW Indian Inspired Colors. |
Alternate Version I grew up in the Pacific Northwest and was surrounded by Indian reservations and was exposed to a lot of NW Indian artwork such as totem poles and painted carvings etc. I've always liked the Black, Grey and Red color scheme they used so I decided to try this art using that palette just to see what it looked like as well. All the textures I used in this art are part of the bonus '30' texture set I give away for FREE to anyone who orders my texture book. For more information about that book visit www.TextureBook.com

 Fun with textures. |
Since my texture book is due out in June I decided I'd play around with some of the textures that come with the book on a recent illustration gig.
I like how it came out.
If you'd like to know more about my texture book you can read up on it here.

Pioneer Spirit
Posted by Von Glitschka at 6:41 pm on December 18th |
Daniel Boone was a man, a biiiiiiig man! |
Sorry for the posting snafu. I think I have it now.
I've been doing a lot of illustrated logos lately. This specific style is fun to work in. Never have drawn a Daniel Boone type figure before so the coon hat was a first.
Schier Products has been pioneering and selling plumbing products since 1972. Many of their product lines have names like 'The Trapper' or 'Great Basin' and they wanted a logo that reflected that same heritage of pioneering spirit. To be specific they wanted a mountain man that could embody a strong persona moving forward.

Big Bocca

 Big Mouth Character |
Here is recent logo job I did for an Italian Animation Firm called 'Big Bocca'. I guess that means 'Big Mouth'? They wanted a cat type of character so I though this would lend itself for animation.
The type you see is a hand lettered font I am slowly creating called 'Nimcompoop'. After about four years of not designing fonts (Fontographer died with OS9) I now have the itch again.
