©Grandma Moses Properties Co., New York | Grandma Moses (Anna Mary Robertson Moses) was born in 1860 and died in 1961. At the time of her death she had become the most popular American folk artist. She started painting landscape scenes of her home state of Vermont in her seventies after arthritis forced her to give up embroidery and by the time of her death, she had created over 1500 works of art. In 1949, President Harry S. Truman presented her with the Women's National Press Club Award for her accomplishments in art.
The Bennington Museum in Bennington, VT, houses one of the largest collections of her work. According to the Wikipedia entry on Grandma Moses a September 2nd 1942 piece entitled "The Old Checkered House, 1862" was originally purchased in the 40s for $110, was appraised at an insurance value of $60,000. Galerie St. Etienne, in New York represents her estate and has an exclusive arm (Grandma Moses Properties Co.) that licenses her images for commercial reproductions. back to top | Anecdotes and Observations | I have a renewed appreciation for Grandma Moses as I grow older. Growing up, I thought it was all kitsch (which it was because it was so nostalgic and marketable). But now, as the hourglass slowly drains, I am heartened to have confirmed the hopeful fact that life begins anew whenever we will it to and that art is an amazing gateway to adventures at any turn in the road.
