Paintings
I've been messing around with acrylics on wood panel for the past several years. Prior to that I did watercolors for years "around the edges" of my illustration work. I made the shift from watercolors to acylics partially because I was sick of having to frame paintings in order to show them and partially because the idea of painting white on black appealed to me. Most of these acylics are finished with crackle varnish and a clear coat of picture varnish, giving them a funky vibe. If you don't like the painting, you can always groove on the cracks.
Watercolors
I painted watercolors in earnest until the turn of the millenium when I decided to paint like the "big boys" and switch to oils and acrylics. These paintings acted as a counterpoint (antidote?) to my commercial work. In them I would explore new techniques, new colors, get looser, get tighter and generally get playful. Alot of the things I learned would eventually creep back into my commercial work, laying waste to the general wisdom that my style has not changed for the past decade or so.
